Open Question: HR job hunt etiquette?
Had another job offer on the table. Good money, good opportunity, had some concerns with the culture and was therefore undecided but the offer was open until this past Tuesday. Decided to turn it down irrespective of what the others offered due to my gut instict. We can afford to be picky and wait for the perfect job. Anyway, followed up with the other 2 companies as soon as I got the offer. Turns out that one decided to pick another one of the 28 candidates and the other misplaced my application when they converted to a new system. No problem. Just didn’t want any rocks unturned that were left since this other company worked so quickly on processing the applications, interviewing, and extending the offer to me.

I know someone that works at the place that missplaced my application and he dug around for me and I also left a voicemail to followup the same day but without knowing that he was following up that day. The person I know also confirmed the story about the new system. 2 days later (8 days ago), I get a return call and am asked to schedule a phone interview for a few hours later and I said that I have an offer but would prefer to work there. I have the phone interview and it was moreso like a “where should we put you” and him selling me on working for the company rather than me selling them on my qualifications. It was very quick. They asked about salary range and he said that is right in the range paid for the position so that was fine. The HR man said that the person who would hire is travelling but he will see about either connecting me with this person by phone or bringing me in to meet with someone else last Friday or no later than Monday. He said not to worry if he didn’t get back to me Thursday afternoon and that he would Friday or Monday depending on this other person’s schedule. He then concluded saying that this person I know recommending me for the position “carries alot of water with the company”. Bottom line is that it sounded like it was pretty much in the bag so long as I don’t screw up an in-person interview. They have 10 identical new positions open and I am very qualified. He even said that the person they have that came from a similar background as me is one of their best rockstars in that position.

Monday around lunch time, I called his office and left a voicemail. It is now Friday and I haven’t heard anything! Do I call again and leave another voicemail, sit tight (maybe something came up where he is out of the office or the hiring person is out of the office), or call on his cell phone? The only reason I know his cell phone number is caller ID so I thought it would be inappropriate. I want to walk the line between being a pest and showing interest. The company is hiring 10 people per week according to this person I know who works there and the way he talked, there weren’t many HR people as he called this person by name (”did ____ talk to you?”). So, when I didn’t get a return call Monday or Tuesday I thought it may be for orientation of this week’s new hires. But, now I am questioning everything.

In my prior job (before moving out here a few weeks ago), I was a regulatory auditor. No one really wanted to talk to me. However, if emails and phone calls didn’t work, we would just walk over to the person’s desk and basically do whatever it took to get the information. We are professionals at walking the line between getting our information and being excessively pushy. Part of the job was to root out fraudsters and thus we had to know when people are lying. I didn’t get that impression from this guy at all that he was just feeding me a line and was then going to stop the process. The person I know there has also been a little off the radar since I last spoke with him Sunday but then he didn’t sound worried at all and said that they are really busy. If I didn’t know so many great things about this place, I would just say that they are disorganized and continue looking. But, I am confused by him showing so much interest and then not returning his voicemail or keeping his word and REALLY would much prefer to take any job at this company than work in my field anywhere else. What would you do?
